The American Two-Party System - The Roots of Polarization - Destroyer of the Independent Movement.

For the first time in our history in the 2016 election there were more Independents voting than either Democrats or Republicans.  Yet Independents remain the victims of the most vicious and discriminatory laws in the nation.  There is no such thing as an Independent party in America, and those who register as an Independent are denied the right to vote in the primary election for federal elected officials in most states.

Did you ever wonder how a nation as powerful as America could be dependent on only two political parties to the exclusion of anyone who disagrees with them? Well it was not always that way. In fact there were no political parties back when we tossed out the English. Perhaps this history of the two party system will help you understand why it evolved and how it might have failed to meet the needs of today.

Following the publication of the Declaration of Independence (1776) and before the successful resolution of the War for Independence (1783), the American colonies decided it would be best to "confederate," at least for the purposes of entering into strategic alliances with European powers and perhaps waging war again with the mother country. This gave the U.S. the Articles of Confederation (1781), the first constitution of the "United States.” But the Articles were soon deemed inadequate and another Constitutional Convention was called (1787) which resulted in the U.S. Constitution (1789). But not without a fight.

The “Federalists” were of course instrumental in the movement for the new U.S. Constitution and for a stronger Federal role. The so-called Anti-Federalists were concerned that this new Federal government might over-power the states' sovereignties and abridge individual citizens' rights (most states had a long and proud history of individual rights). The passage of the Bill of Rights, as a permanent limit to the powers of the Federal government, answered much of that argument. Nonetheless, the struggle between a strong Federal government and state sovereignties has been an important thread in the play of our two-party system from the very beginning.

From that beginning in 1789, the U.S. didn't have a two-party system; it had George Washington, a President without a party. During his two terms, a rivalry grew between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, both Federalists. Jefferson challenged Adams under the banner of the Democratic-Republican party. Interesting that this first real party, alone, should contain the nominal seeds of the present two-party system. The word Democratic implies will of the people, the word Republican implies rule of law (protection from a potential tyranny of the majority). The (mostly aristocratic and Virginian) Democratic-Republicans kept the Presidency from 1800 through 1828.

In 1828, the popular war-hero Andrew Jackson became the first President from a new party, the Democrats, the true party “of the people." With the exception of one term when the Whigs (a party whose name more clearly identified itself as the party of privilege than the Democratic-Republicans whom they replaced) won the Presidency, the Democrats held the White House until 1860.

The Northern Abolitionist Movement gave birth to a new party (1856), the Republicans. Abraham Lincoln was their first successful candidate for President (1860). The Northern, anti-slavery and pro-business Republicans held the White House thru 1912, with the exception of the Democrat Grover Cleveland's two non-consecutive terms. 1864 really marks the beginning of the two-party system of Democrats and Republicans. From the beginning, the Republicans have been Northern and pro-business, the Democrats Southern and more populist. Woodrow Wilson was the only other Democratic President besides Cleveland before the Great Depression. So, for all intents and purposes, the Republicans held Presidential power for 72 years but for 16 Democratic years.

The Great Depression (1929 and forward) changed all that. As business had so completely failed the people, the party of the people, the Democrats, under Franklin Roosevelt, won the support of the majority of the voters. Indeed, they kept power through 1968 except for the two terms of Dwight Eisenhower, who won his elections not for his politics but for his stature as a war-hero. Pretty much the Democrats (FDR, JFK, LBJ) successfully defined themselves as the party of the people, of the poor and middle class, and of the large and growing labor movement.

The Republicans were pretty much forced to redefine themselves, not as the party of privilege but as the party of individual and states’ rights, and of tax cuts and reduced government spending. But this didn't win them elections (nor did it represent their real values). Most Americans since FDR have identified themselves as Democrats, a natural thing as most Americans are not wealthy. Ever since 1932, the Republicans have only won the Presidency when their candidate was more personable and more “Presidential,” not because of his positions on the issues. Poll after poll for the last 70 years show Americans identify with Democratic positions even when they elect a Republican. TV has been a potent force in this phenomenon, as has the increasing role of religion and ignorance in the American political scene.

The nature of the parties' differences has altered dramatically, if not fundamentally, since 1864. The initial differences were over slavery and industrialism and the dominance of the South (poorer and less populous) by the North. The differences in the 1890's, following a Depression, were over a Gold standard and whether debts were to be repaid by cheaper or more dear money. In the 1910's, party differences centered around isolationism and fighting World War I. In the 1930's, again following the start of a Depression, the Democrats became the party of the people and of the Labor Movement while the Republicans were seen as the party of the Wealthy.

Since Franklin D. Roosevelt, then, the parties have divided the electorate, for better or for worse, along economic class lines. How then, you ask, have the Republicans been able to win any national elections at all, as they are the party of the Sheriff of Nottingham, not the party of Robin Hood? The reason is not hard to see. The rise of the Independents, now larger than the registration of either major party, began during the Viet Nam era and has accelerated ever since.

Both parties have lost their identity and lost their commitment to principles long held sacred.  As the voter had a more difficult time distinguishing between the two, neither party could dominate as split power between the parties provided a viable check and balance for the people.

While the more aggressive conservatives in the Republican party, Liberals in the Democratic party, and Libertarians in the loose confederation of the Tea party get all the media attention, in truth all three are fighting it out for control of the middle ground in political philosophy.

Today America can be found where the conservative and liberal philosophies blend in the middle, where fiscal responsibility and limited federal government embrace certain social obligations while rejecting other social issues.  America is not about class separation and philosophical polarization, it is about individual freedom and equal opportunity.  Neither party holds the key to such a goal.

No Republican wants to starve the poor or cut benefits for the elderly any more than a Democrat wants to wipe out the upper class or take over big business. The very concept of such thought is promulgated by the news media to increase TV ratings, sell advertising or sell newspapers. Oh yeah, and also to help all the news "contributors" and political pundits sell their latest book telling us what is wrong with our country but only from their perspective.

So that is an entirely over-simplification of the history and evolution of the two party system and it will hopefully give you some insight into how we got in our current mess.  Getting out may take a lot more work than we hoped.

Thank you for being part of the great American experience - by voting! Now it is time to heal!

One thing is clear and maybe we can all agree upon it, the election is over and we have now been a part of the greatest experiment in democracy in the history of the world if you are one of the 100 million plus who vote today, November 6.  Over 30 million early votes were cast, a new record, and the total votes cast could approach record levels.

This is how our Republic continues to be the strongest nation on earth after only 242 years of existence, when the Democrats, Republicans and Independents cast their votes throughout the nation.

Now, this could be one of the most contentious elections in our history as well, with the hatred, fake news, attempts by other nations to interfere, polarization, and all the other bitterness involved. However, we survived intact though rather scarred and bruised in the process.

Now the true test of American spirit comes, whether we can get over the craziness, tone down the rhetoric, stop the insults and lies, and act like mature Americans again.  Might be asking for a lot with the presidential election looming in the near distance.

Gracias por votar!

No matter what the outcome, now would be a nice time to patch up the differences between parties and candidates, respect the winners and losers, and start working together whoever is left standing for the good of all Americans, not just the special interest maybe of us have been supporting.

A great deal has been accomplished yet a lot remains to be done.  We must fix the broken health care system before people are broke and start dying because they cannot afford treatment or insurance premiums.  That is not a political problem but an American problem.  While we are at it we need to finally redirect health care from treating people to healing people to keeping them from ever getting sick in the first place.   Only then will we be on the right track.

We must address immigration reform and eliminate the barriers to getting into the country by enforcing the fixing and enforcing the laws on the books.  Comprehensive reform is needed to guide us through the twenty-first century.  This too is an American problem and one party cannot fix it a bipartisan solution is required.

Trade agreements must be negotiated with China and the rest of the world, containment of nations like North Korea and Iran must be fixed, peace must finally come to the middle east, and we must address the financial stability of our Social Security,  Medicare and retirement systems, so future generations of our offspring have the security and opportunity they deserve.

Once again no political party is going to achieve this, it must be a bipartisan effort and it will have to be heroic.  So thank you for taking part in the election, now it is time to share responsibility for the future of our great nation.

Come together.

Polls Close in East - Hillary Declared Winner

The polls just closed in the East while remaining open in the Midwest and West, but the mainstream media has already declared Hillary Clinton the 45th and first female in our nation's history President.

Based on the results of Exit Polls throughout the country, most media declared Hillary the decisive winner.  The Exit Polls are interviews with actual voters leaving the voting booths.

Unlike other political polls of which there are many, only one presidential Exit Poll exists and is taken.  Since the poll is owned by a coalition of the major television networks, and it is not released in it's entirety to the public, there is no way to validate or verify the results.

In spite of the tremendous media bias against Donald Trump and media devotion to Hillary Clinton, it still seems a bit odd the networks declared her the winner with just below 5% of the national vote cast and counted.

Over 50% of the public still has time to get out and vote.  One might suspect there is media collusion in trying to discourage possible Trump supporters in these states to give up and not vote for Trump.

Historic Hillary Victory a Tidal Wave claim Pundits

The polls have now closed in the continental United States as the nation and world await the results of the presidential election.  So far just 22% of the popular vote has been reported.

Early absentee voting tallies indicate a record number of Americans cast their ballots before election day.  Political pundits say it is another great sign for a Hillary landslide.  "Banner headlines" in the major newspapers early editions, along with a never ending stream of "braking news" bulletins on television networks rejoice in the Clinton victory over Donald Trump, as projected by the media.

No results are official until certified by the election boards in each state.  None have been certified yet and the national tracking map indicates no electoral votes have been awarded.

The national media continues to tout the Exit Polls and a Hillary landslide but the release of actual vote totals is at an excruciatingly slow pace by the states.

Those votes reported to the media indicate a much closer race than the Exit Poll blowout projection.  No pattern is emerging in voting other than a near dead heat in national vote total while the seven key swing states remain too close to predict at this time.

Could it be the national news media Exit Poll is wrong?  Early indications suggest if the TV networks actually reported the results received in Exit interviews, the voters were giving misleading answers to the media.

Perhaps voters believe they have a right to keep silent when it comes to elections, an exercise of their right to privacy.

At the same time, there are reports of much higher new voter totals than expected, and the turnout among Independents and Republicans is up significantly.

Clinton Landslide fails to Materialize - Exit Polls Wrong - but How Wrong?

A haunting silence has overcome the nation as Americans wake up and go to work expecting to hear from our new President Hillary Clinton.  Instead, there is a heightened sense of anxiety on the part of those prematurely declaring Clinton the victor.

After late night calls for a Clinton victory celebration, her failure to pull away in the electoral count has stunned and silenced her Establishment friends.

While all seven key swing states hang perilously in the balance, the leader in popular votes swings wildly from Clinton to Trump and back like a pendulum on steroids.

Perhaps the Populist Revolution did not fade away as predicted by the Establishment and their news media.  Maybe the election has nothing to do with Donald Trump but is a referendum on Clinton and the Establishment.

If proven true, it will be the greatest upset in election history far surpassing the Truman - Dewey race in 1948.

Media Missteps as the Propaganda Machine Moves on - You are the Pawns!

.

We probably do not need a totalitarian government when we have the media to remind us what it would be like to be spoon fed our truth without the necessity for fact checking, honesty, or whatever version of the truth you care to embrace.

Thanks to the Internet, those too lazy to research and make up their own minds can simply cut and paste anything they want and take possession of it as their way of thinking.

Well this article is for all those who have given up the right to think and have settled on parroting causes because they sound nice, or attack the right people, or are so stupid no one will ever know what you are talking about in your message.

Here is a word both liberals and conservatives have long forgotten, PROPAGANDA.  Here are a few more lost words, TRUTH, COMPROMISE, KNOWLEDGE, WISDOM, COMPASSION, EQUALITY, well, the list goes on and on.

You see, probably close to 90% of all websites deliberately or stupidly distort the truth in order to sucker people into liking the site, which in turns gets fools to share the site so more fools will look at and share the site.

If you are a liberal, you have just become the greatest contributor to feeding the rich, your enemy, because you let someone make money from the ads embedded in the propaganda you posted.  So next time you demand we redistribute the wealth you can start by NOT sharing info whose sole purpose is to line the pockets of the rich.

The same is true of the conservatives.  Both the liberals and conservatives are clueless pawns in the game of power and greed.  There seems to be nothing they can do to get out of the addiction they have to sharing untruths.

Somewhere along the way, they have lost the ability to think for themselves, to construct meaningful sentences to explain what they think, and to worry about such trivial issues as truth and consequences.

In short, the social advocates have politicized every good cause and polarized the population in the process.  There is probably one hope left for the world and that is God triggering a massive solar eruption on the sun and bombarding the Earth with a solar storm.

By the way, that does not even require weapons of mass destruction.

The radiation will not harm humans but hopefully will destroy electronic equipment and infrastructure thus ending cell phones, texting, tweets, twits, streaming video, cyber space, the Internet, the senseless babble between uninformed robots called people, and bring peace at last to the world.

Of course, a side benefit might be the destruction of all triggering mechanisms for the vast arms dealers and warmongers and nations in possession of nuclear weapons since they are all electronic as well.

Are you willing to pay the price for peace?  Are you ready to just shut up!
