Women’s US World Cup team takes America by storm – set sights on the Capital to use the “special” platform they now own. Really?

Perhaps they were misinformed by the liberal news media obsessing to have them as guests, but as great as the victory in France might be, the high-charged egos might need a bit of humility before they get to the swamp in Washington, DC.

So, hold on Women’s World Cup Soccer champions, you were good but not that good when it came to actual television ratings, which mean everything in politics.  You may be receiving the VIP treatment from NYC which was well earned for your play, but your adoration from the liberal television networks and Democrats is a bit over the cliff.

America may not be ready to hand over the keys to the White House just yet, nor can Nancy Pelosi or AOC promise you any action on your causes because they cannot deliver anything without the approval of a Republican Senate and Republican President.

You are the pride of the pitch but do not let the progressive, liberal news media or politicians hoodwink you, they are still far on the outside of power looking in.  I suspect you might be caught up in the adoration which was well deserved for your play on the field but your demands for change have little chance for success without the help of the dastardly GOP.

Here are a few facts regarding the relative power of the performance of the team.

The Netherlands saw record figures, with 5.5 million people, or 88 percent of the viewing public, tuning in to watch their side go down 2-0 to Team USA.

The United States' 2-0 victory over the Netherlands, its second straight title and fourth overall, on Sunday delivered an average of 13.98 million viewers on Fox.

Streaming added an average minute audience of 289,000 (a 400 percent increase over 2015), bringing the total to 14.27 million on Fox Sports platforms. Telemundo added 1.6 million viewers — the most ever for a Women's World Cup match on a Spanish-language network — for a total of 15.87 million on all platforms.

Sunday's broadcast, which aired at 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT, is down considerably (almost ten million) from that of the 2015 final. That match is the most-watched in Women's World Cup history in the U.S. with 25.4 million viewers on all platforms.
The U.S. audience for this year's final is third all-time for Women's World Cup games, behind the 2015 final and the final match of 1999 (18 million).
What does it all mean?
The population of the Netherlands is 17.08 million (2017), which means 32.2% of the nation’s entire population was tuned in.

The population of the US is 327.2 million (2018), which means just 4.2% of the entire US population was tuned in on television.

For comparison purposes, the 2019 Super Bowl drew a TV audience of 98.7 million viewers, which was the smallest audience in eleven years.  Still it was seven times more than the World Cup finals.

As for the President you seem inclined to reject, Donald Trump’s inauguration ratings were the second-highest in 36 years, according to Nielsen.  The swearing-in of the 45th president in 2017 was seen by 30.6 million viewers.

Even more ominous, the President’s State of the Union address - TV Ratings: 46.8 million watched Trump’s 2019 State of the Union, up slightly from 46.79 million in 2018.

Soccer team appearances on Rachel Maddow (MSNBC) and CNN, the liberal bastions of cable news, might not help much.  The June ratings tell the truth.

As for the Top 5 cable news shows, June was a lot like last year, with the exception of Tucker Carlson moving up to the second slot previously held by Dems debate co-moderator Rachel Maddow. Other than Tucker’s uptick, everyone else in the Top 5 took a little hit, with the final tally being Hannity - Fox (3.2 million), Tucker Carlson Tonight - Fox (2.8 million), The Rachel Maddow Show - MSNBC (2.5 million), The Ingraham Angle - Fox (2.4 million) and The Five - Fox (2.3 million).

Then there was lowly CNN.  Down 18% in both total day and primetime viewership from Q2 2018, not a single one of the Warner Media-owned net’s shows made it into the cable news Top 20. Cuomo Prime Time was the most watched CNN show, sitting at No. 25 among cable news offerings.

Did I mention Trump got over 62 million votes for president and has 61 million followers on Twitter?  That is reality.  That is the truth.

This was a really big week for news – but few seemed to show up at the party!

Where did all the people go?

In the most tumultuous week of the Trump presidency as two former associates were in court, both were convicted of an array of charges having nothing to do with Trump in the case of Manafort, and very little to do with Trump in the case of Cohen and his plea bargain, all media guns were trained on bringing about the demise of Trump through impeachment.

With that kind of action, one might have expected the largest TV audiences and ratings of the Trump presidency.  Well, if you add the network prime time numbers with the cable average viewing numbers for all the stations making the Nielsen weekly report press release, a total of 28.8 million viewers had their globes glued to the screen on average each day.

So, Nielsen also says there are 304 million potential viewers over two years of age, which seems about the right starting age for the quality of television viewing content.  That means, hummm, barely NINE PERCENT of the potential American viewers watched the network and cable telly each day.

I am not sure but that could be about the fewest TV viewers since 1953 (sixty-five years ago) when there were about twenty-seven million TVs in use.  Wake up media, because the good news is very bad for you.  The good news is 275 million Americans have better things to do than watch television.  Perhaps this is the clearest sign yet that Americans are fed up with television news content and television show content.

I, for one, am quite pleased with the American boycott of non-essential news and generally stupid programming, not to mention the saturation of advertisements, served up by the broadcast media.  One can only hope the aversion of Americans to advertising saturation will slow down the spiraling increase in the digital addiction of our younger generations.

Facts:

According to Nielsen's National Television Household Universe Estimates, there are 119.6 million TV homes in the U.S. for the 2017-18 TV season. The number of persons age 2 and older in U.S. TV Households is estimated to be 304.5 million, which represents a 0.9% increase from last year.  Aug 25, 2017.

Here are the latest Nielsen ratings.

By David Bauder - Associated Press - Tuesday, August 28, 2018
NEW YORK — If it’s a lousy week for President Donald Trump, it’s usually a good week for Rachel Maddow.

MSNBC’s marquee personality took advantage of a busy week of bad news for the president, led by former lawyer Michael Cohen’s plea deal and former campaign manager Paul Manafort’s conviction on corruption charges.

She had the top-rated show on cable television on Tuesday with 3.89 million viewers. Maddow beat the usual cable ratings leader, Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity, for the week.

Behind its summer juggernaut “America’s Got Talent,” now being shown on two nights, NBC won the week in prime-time with an average of 4.9 million viewers. CBS had 4 million viewers, ABC had 3.6 million, Fox had 2.6 million, ION Television had 1.4 million, Univision and Telemundo were tied with 1.21 million and the CW had 770,000.

ABC’s “World News Tonight” topped the evening newscasts with an average of 8 million viewers. The “NBC Nightly News” had 7.4 million and the “CBS Evening News” had 5.7 million.

For the week of Aug. 20-26, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewership:

Entertainment Award Shows - An Idea whose Time is Done?

.

When we open the envelope and announce the winner why is it the entertainer has to become a politician, a special interest advocate, or try to create personal attention for their own career?  If they choose the latter, it is usually through the use of provocative techniques.

Whatever the point, they are constantly driving down the number of people watching the shows and a trend that started a decade ago seems to be well established.

Why are winners not able to be humble and thank their fans and those helping them in their career?  The last thing anyone wants to hear is some millionaire entertainer telling us what is in our best interests, or what is wrong with the world we live in.

If I want to watch a political sideshow, there are much better, and more informed sources than the singer or actor who spends most of their life living other people's lives on screen or stage.  Political rants come from all types on the award shows and the hypocritical speeches often are lost in the reputation and actions of the speaker.

Note to nominees - you are not me, you are an entertainer.  Stick to entertaining, that gives you the big bucks to stand on your soapbox and preach to the masses.  A handful of entertainers actually do spend some time the rest of the year helping legitimate causes but they are few and far between.

Here is what the news media has to say about the award show ratings this past year.

Grammys Ratings Woes Worse Than They Appear: A Bad Sign for Oscars?

TV Ratings: Grammy Awards Hit All-Time Low in Key Demo

Sharp drop in ratings for Grammy Awards this year
The television audience for Bruno Mars' dominating night at the Grammy Awards was a sparser one than music's big night has seen for nearly a decade, and a steep decline of 24 percent from the program a year earlier.

The Nielsen company estimated Monday that 19.8 million people watched the Grammys, compared to 26.1 million last year. It was the Grammys' smallest audience since 19 million watched in 2009.
The viewership decline was notable compared to other awards shows recently. The most recent Golden Globes and Oscars telecasts were down 4 percent from the previous year, while last September's Emmys viewership was roughly the same as the year before, Nielsen said.
Grammy viewership has generally been between 20 and 30 million this past decade, from a high of 39.9 million people who watched in 2012, when the awards took place shortly after Whitney Houston's death.
TV Ratings: Oscars Drop to 32.9M Viewers, Telecast Takes a Bigger Hit With Younger Set
After initial indicators had Sunday's lengthy show off from 2016, time-zone adjusted tallies give this year's Oscars an average 32.9 million viewers. That marks a 4 percent drop in viewership from the prior. Early stats had the show averaging an overnight 22.4 rating among metered market households. (Last year's outing saw its overnight score, a 23.4 rating, ultimately translate to 34.4 million viewers.) In the key demo of adults 18-49, this year's show averaged a 9.1 rating — off a more dramatic 14 percent from the 2016 telecast, which averaged a 10.5 rating among the advertiser-favored viewers.

NBC's telecast of Golden Globe Awards draws 19 million viewers, down 5% from last year
On a night when politics nearly overshadowed show business, NBC's telecast of Golden Globes Awards was watched by 19 million viewers on Sunday, a 5% decline from 2017.

But this year's show saw an 11% year-to-year decline in the 18-to-49 age group that advertisers covet most.

Emmys ratings sink to all-time low of 11.3 million viewers

The show, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for ABC, fell 5% from last year’s broadcast and 22% in the key demo of adults aged 18-49.

Mar. 1, 2017 7:12 pmThe Right Scoop

Trump’s speech has climbed another 4 million from earlier numbers today, putting him within 5 million of Obama’s address to Congress in 2009:

VARIETY – According to Nielsen’s final official tally, Trump’s speech drew 47.74 million viewers from approximately 9 to 10:15 p.m. across 11 networks. Those 11 networks counted by Nielsen were ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, Univision, PBS, CNN, Fox Business Network, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, and NBC Universo.

President Obama’s first address pulled in an audience of 52.37 million people across the four broadcast networks, Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Telemundo, and Univision — a difference of about 9%. The audience for President George W. Bush’s first address, at 39.79 million, was overshadowed by the State of the Union Address he delivered in 2003, which brought in 62.06 million viewers.

Fox Tops Broadcast and Cable News in Inauguration Ratings; CNN Posts Strong Primetime Numbers

by Justin Baragona | 10:37 am, January 23rd, 2017

Friday was Inauguration Day and therefore a huge day for broadcast and cable news coverage. And the undisputed winner of the ratings battle for the day was Fox News.

During the peak coverage block of 11 AM to 4 PM ET, Fox News averaged 8.77 million viewers and 2.19 million in the key 25-54 demographic. The cable news network pulled in nearly three million more than the runner-up NBC, who drew 5.90 million viewers and 2.02 million in the 25-54 demo. ABC and CBS finished third and fourth, with 4.90 million and 4.65 million viewers respectively.

As for the other cable news channels, CNN nabbed and audience 2.61 million and 942,000 in the demo in that time block. They nearly doubled up MSNBC who brought in 1.38 million and 309,000 in the demographic.

During the the Oath and Inaugural Address, Fox really dominated. The channel drew 11.77 million during that timeframe and 2.99 million in the demo. CNN, meanwhile, attracted 3.38 million viewers and 1.21 million in the 25-54 age range. MSNBC was at 1.49 million and 315,000 demo viewers.

In primetime coverage, which featured the inaugural balls, Fox News pulled in 6.96 million total viewers and 1.77 million in the 25-54 demographic. CNN enticed 4.53 million total people to watch and 1.39 million in the demo. MSNBC drew a total audience of 1.62 million and 395,000 in the key demographic.

As for the business channels, Fox Business topped CNBC in the 11 AM – 4 PM block. FBN pulled in a total of 536,000 viewers and 104,000 in the 25-54 age group compared to CNBC’s 314,000 total viewers and 91,000 in the demo.

Cable TV Rankings 2016: Presidential Politics Fuels Ratings Gains

December 20, 2016

2016 will be remembered as the year Donald Trump won the White House by taking control of the television news cycle. One year after the reality TV star’s antics and debate performances nearly catapulted Fox News Channel to the top spot among basic cable networks, finishing within 300,000 viewers of ESPN, this year Fox News leapfrogged the sports network by more than half a million primetime viewers, averaging nearly 2.5 million to ESPN’s 1.9 million.

With presidential politics taking over as viewers’ contact sport of choice, FNC enjoyed a 36% year-to-year total-viewer spike, while ESPN tumbled 11%, after 2015’s 7% decline.

But FNC wasn’t the only cable news network benefiting. CNN enjoyed a Trump-fueled 77% total-viewers spike, pushing AMC out of the yearly primetime Top 10; last year, CNN only notched a 24th-place finish.

This year, AMC will settle for 11th place, after dropping 9% year to year.

And MSNBC, last year’s No. 29-ranked basic cable net in overall primetime crowd, jumped 87% to land at No. 12 with 1.1M viewers compared with previous year’s 596K.

The rest of 2016’s Top 10 list is the Land of Double-Digit Declines, save USA Network, which dropped a more modest 8%, and HGTV, the only non-news network to experience audience again in primetime crowd, to the tune of 5%.

USA Network

USA did, however, hang on to its status as the most watched basic cable entertainment network for an 11th consecutive year, finishing behind FNC and ESPN with 1.7M viewers.

ESPN hung on to the top spot in the coveted 18-49 demographic group, with 816K viewers in that age bracket. But here too the network tumbled, 12%, on the heels of last year’s 9% slip.

In the demo, as in overall audience, the biggest year-to-year gains were enjoyed by the news networks. CNN spiked a massive 90% in the 18-49 age group, logging 373K primetime viewers to outstrip FNC (354K, up 51%) for the year. In the percentage racket, CNN was beaten by MSNBC, which climbed 99% from last year’s negligible 104K to 207K this year.

But TBS was No. 2 in the demo to ESPN with 729K viewers, despite sloughing off 13% of its audience; USA followed (692K), with a 4% year-to-year slip.
