Today the UK goes to the polls in one of the most polarizing elections in modern history (boy does that sound familiar.). The voters must decide if the UK will remain part of the European Union. The decision will impact on the world economy for many years to come.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron has bet his career in politics on persuading voters to remain in the EU. Pollsters show the outcome too close to call or predict.
As posted several days ago on LinkedIn, the Coltons Point Times predicts the UK will vote to remain in the EU on June 23.
The stock market will soar,
the Pound currency will strengthen,
and David Cameron of the UK will win election as Prime Minister again.
The Crown Jewels will be safe for another few decades.
Unfortunately, Member of Parliament and rising star Jo Cox was assassinated by a fanatic opposed to her stand in support of remaining in the EU.

Jo Cox, Rising star in UK Parliament, Shot Dead in Northern England
.
British lawmaker shot dead, EU referendum campaigns suspended
A British member of parliament was shot dead in the street on Thursday, causing deep shock acrossBritain and the suspension of
campaigning for next week's referendum on the country's EU membership.
Jo Cox, 41, a lawmaker for the opposition Labour Party and a vocal advocate forBritain
remaining in the European Union, was attacked while preparing to meet
constituents in Birstall near Leeds in northern England .
Media reports said she had been shot and stabbed.West Yorkshire regional police said a
52-year-old man was arrested by officers nearby and weapons including a firearm
recovered. "We are not in a position to discuss any motive at this
time," said Temporary Chief Constable Dee Collins.
One witness said a man pulled an old or makeshift gun from a bag and fired twice. "I saw a lady on the floor like on the beach with her arms straight and her knees up and blood all over the face," Hichem Ben-Abdallah told reporters. "She wasn't making any noise, but clearly she was in agony."
The lawmaker's husband Brendan said: "She would have wanted two things above all else to happen now: one, that our precious children are bathed in love and two, that we all unite to fight against the hatred that killed her."
The rival referendum campaign groups said they were suspending activities for the day, with the Remain camp saying its activities would also be suspended on Friday. Prime Minister David Cameron said he would pull out of a planned rally in Gibraltar, the British territory on the southern coast ofSpain .
Cameron said the killing of the mother-of-two, who had worked on U.S. President Barack Obama's 2008 election campaign, was a tragedy.
"We have lost a great star," the Conservative prime minister said. "She was a great campaigning MP with huge compassion, with a big heart. It is dreadful, dreadful news."
It was not immediately clear what the impact would be on the June 23 referendum, which has polarized the nation into pro- and anti-EU camps. But some analysts speculated it could boost the pro-EU "Remain" campaign, which in recent days has fallen behind the "Leave" camp in opinion polls.
Britain 's
sterling currency rose against the dollar after news of the attack, adding
around two cents.
Finance minister George Osborne and Bank ofEngland
Governor Mark Carney scrapped major speeches planned for Thursday evening and
the International Monetary Fund said it had delayed the publication of a report
on the British economy.
'HORRIFIC MURDER'
Media reports, citing witnesses, said the attacker had shouted out "Britain
first", which is the name of a right-wing nationalist group that describes
itself on its website as "a patriotic political party and street defence
organisation".
But the deputy leader of the group, Jayda Fransen, completely distanced it from the attack, which she described as "absolutely disgusting".
West Yorkshire 's
elected Police and Crime Commissioner said "our information is that this
is a localised incident, albeit one that has a much wider impact".
Gun ownership is highly restricted inBritain , and
attacks of any nature on public figures are rare. The last British lawmaker to
have been killed in an attack was Ian Gow, who died after a bomb planted by the
Irish Republican Army (IRA) exploded under his car at his home in southern England in
1990.
Britain 's
Union Jack flag was flying at half-mast over the Houses of Parliament in London , while in Birstall
hundreds of people attended a vigil at a local church.
Colleagues expressed their shock and disbelief at the death of Cox, aCambridge
University graduate who
had spent a decade working for aid agency Oxfam in roles including head of
humanitarian campaigning and was known for her work on women's issues.
She won election to parliament for northernEngland 's Batley and Spen district at the 2015
general election, and lived with her husband and children on a traditional
Dutch barge moored on the Thames near the Tower of London .

British lawmaker killed in "charged" atmosphere before vote on EU
By Reuters

By Michael Holden
LONDON, June 17 (Reuters) - In the weeks before lawmaker
Jo Cox was killed, there were warnings that passions could spill into violence
in the fevered campaign for next week's referendum on Britain's membership of
the European Union.
Police have declined to comment on the motive for
Thursday's murder, but the attack has raised questions about whether those
fears have now been realised.
Cox, a supporter of the campaign to stay in the EU, was
shot and stabbed by a man who witnesses said shouted "Britain
first" -- a rallying cry for some supporters of the "Leave"
campaign but also the name of a right-wing group.
Leading figures from the "Remain" campaign have
made no link between Cox's death and the referendum campaign, which has become
increasingly angry and bitter in the latter stages.
But on social media some Britons highlighted a warning
last month by Nigel Farage, leader of the anti-EU UKIP party and one of the
most prominent figures in the referendum campaign.
"I think it is legitimate to say that if people feel
they've lost control completely, and we have lost control of our borders
completely as members of the European Union, and if people feel that voting
doesn't change anything then violence is the next step," Farage told BBC
TV in last month's comments.
He went on to say he found it "difficult to
contemplate it happening here but nothing is impossible", and said after
the attack that he was horrified and deeply saddened.
One of the most emotive issues during the campaign for
the June 23 referendum has been immigration.
Supporters of a British exit, or Brexit, say that
uncontrolled immigration from the rest of the EU has put pressure on jobs and
services, and that millions of Turks could arrive in Britain
if Turkey
joins the 28-country bloc.
"Taking place inside the febrile and
increasingly-charged atmosphere of the EU referendum debate -- with the swing
to anti-immigrant sentiment -- for some that may swing them towards hate, and
for a smaller minority perhaps even violence," Nick Ryan, of the
anti-racism group Hope Not Hate, told Reuters.
Tempers have also flared over accusations of
scaremongering by both sides and allegations by each that the other is
distorting the facts, especially on the cost of EU membership to Britain and the
likely economic impact of a Brexit.
The "Remain" campaign led by Prime Minister
David Cameron says an exit would be a "leap into the dark" for the
country and its economy. The "Leave" campaign says a Brexit would
liberate Britain
to trade more freely with the world.
FAR-RIGHT LINKS?
British media have named the suspected killer arrested by
police as 52-year-old Thomas Mair, whose brother said he had a history of
mental illness and no strong political views.
But a U.S.
civil rights group said a man by the name of Thomas Mair had been associated
with a neo-Nazi organisation since 1999, and the cry of "Britain
first" heard by witnesses raised the possibility the attack was
politically-motivated.
Among those to use the phrase is a small Christian,
right-wing nationalist political party called Britain First whose motto is
"Taking Our Country Back".
The party, set up in 2011, wants to halt immigration,
deport all illegal immigrants and make it an act of treason to transfer any
sovereignty to a foreign institution.
But its leader, Paul Golding, has distanced the group
from any link to Cox's killing, which he called a "despicable crime",
and said it had no connections with Mair.
"What this person said -- was he referring to an
organisation, was he referring to a slogan, was he shouting out in the middle
of an EU debate 'It's time we put Britain first'?" he said in a
video statement on the group's website.
"I've heard this almost every day. It's the name of
our party yes ... (but) everyone is saying it's time we put Britain first,
it's the type of language that's been utilised during this referendum
campaign."
The party has 1.4 million "likes" on Facebook
and anti-fascist campaigners say its ranks include former members of the
British nationalist Party (BNP), a far-right party that won two seats in
elections to the European Parliament in 2009.
But Britain First remains a fringe party, having mustered
just 1 percent of first-round votes when Golding stood in an election for
London Mayor in May.
Golding turned his back when it was announced that
Labour's Muslim candidate, Sadiq Khan, had won the election and although the
party rejects accusations it is racist, it says it wants to introduce a
comprehensive ban on Islam.
It also recently held its first activist training camp in
the mountains of north Wales ,
with a film on its website showing members wearing military fatigues holding
Union flags, boxing and practicing self-defence.
Support for far-right parties in Europe has grown as the
continent struggles with an influx of migrants, most notably in Austria where
far-right candidate Norbert Hofer almost won a presidential election in May.
But Britain
has not seen any notable rise in far-right public backing, and the BNP has
faded into obscurity. (Editing by Guy Faulconbridge and Timothy Heritage)

street in northern England
on Thursday, causing shock across Britain and leading to the
suspension of campaigning for next week's referendum on the country's EU
membership. [nL8N1991FN]
Following
is a summary of reaction:
BRENDAN COX, JO'S HUSBAND
"Jo
believed in a better world and she fought for it every day of her life with an
energy and a zest for life that would exhaust most people.
"She
would have wanted two things above all else to happen now: one that our
precious children are bathed in love and two, that we all unite to fight
against the hatred that killed her."
PRIME MINISTER DAVID CAMERON
"We
have lost a great star. She was a great campaigning MP with huge compassion,
with a big heart."
"It
is right that we are suspending campaigning activity in this referendum, and
everyone's thoughts will be with Jo's family and her constituents at this
terrible time."
LABOUR PARTY LEADER JEREMY CORBYN
"We've
lost a wonderful woman, we've lost a wonderful member of parliament, but our
democracy will go on. Her work will go on. As we mourn her memory, we'll work
in her memory to achieve that better world she spent her life trying to
achieve."
"Jo
died doing her public duty at the heart of our democracy, listening to and
representing the people she was elected to serve."
"In
the coming days, there will be questions to answer about how and why she died.
But for now all our thoughts are with Jo's husband Brendan and their two young
children."
"I
am horrified by the assassination of British MP Jo Cox, murdered earlier today
in her district in Northern England . By all
accounts, she was a rising star. It is cruel and terrible that her life was cut
short by a violent act of political intolerance.
"It
is critical that the United States
and Britain ,
two of the world's oldest and greatest democracies, stand together against
hatred and violence. This is how we must honour Jo Cox -- by rejecting bigotry
in all its forms, and instead embracing, as she always did, everything that
binds us together."
GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL
"The
incident is terrible, dramatic and our thoughts are with the people affected –
the Labour lawmakers, the politicians. I don't want to connect this with the
vote on Great Britain
staying in the European Union.
"I
think the lesson must be that we have to treat each other with respect, even if
we have different political views.
"The
exaggerations and radicalisation in some of the language do not help to foster
an atmosphere of this kind of respect. That is why all of us who value the
democratic rules of the game know how important it is to be careful to set
limits in choosing our words and in making our arguments, and to treat with
respect those who think differently, who have different faiths, who live
differently, and who love differently. Otherwise the radicalization will be
difficult to stop."
FRENCH PRIME MINISTER MANUEL VALLS
"Deeply
sad for Jo Cox and the British people. Through her it's our democratic ideals
that were targeted. Never accept that!"
U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN KERRY
"I
join you in expressing my deep sorrow that a young parliamentarian, who
obviously was a young woman of enormous talent, has been killed in the conduct
of her duties with her constituency. It is an assault on everybody who
cares about and has faith in democracy. And our thoughts are profoundly with
the family – her husband, her children – and with all of the British people,
who I know feel the loss profoundly."
BRITISH FINANCE MINISTER GEORGE OSBORNE
"Jo
fought to help the refugees from the Syrian
civil war – she gave a voice to those whose cry for help she felt was not being
heard."
"It
changed attitudes and I know it contributed to a change in policy. She will
never know how many lives she helped transform. Today, doing that job, she
senselessly lost her own life."
DUTCH FINANCE MINISTER JEROEN DIJSSELBLOEM, CHAIRMAN
OF GROUP OF EURO ZONE FINANCE MINISTERS
"The
UK
is a beacon for peaceful politics and we hope that the British public ... can
make their democratic choices serenely and in a safe way next week."
DANISH PRIME MINISTER LARS RASMUSSEN
"My
thoughts are with her family, her friends, and the British people. It was
a true shock to me that a British politician was killed during the
campaign."
SCOTTISH FIRST MINISTER NICOLA STURGEON
"This
is utterly shocking and tragic news, which has left everyone stunned."
"She
was held in huge regard as a brilliant young woman, who had already contributed
a huge amount in her time in parliament, and today she was simply going about
her job as a local MP."
U.S. AMBASSADOR TO BRITAIN MATTHEW BARZUN
"We
are heartbroken by the loss to her family and country of MP Jo Cox. My love and
our love to them, in this time of unbearable grief."
FORMER U.S. CONGRESSWOMAN GABRIELLE GIFFORDS, WHO
SURVIVED SHOOTING IN 2011
"Absolutely
sickened to hear of the assassination of Jo Cox. She was young, courageous, and
hardworking. A rising star, mother, and wife."
MAX LAWSON OF CHARITY OXFAM, WHO WORKED CLOSELY WITH
COX
"Jo
was a diminutive pocket rocket from the north. She was a ball of energy, always
smiling, full of new ideas, of idealism, of passion. She gave so much to
Oxfam."
DAVID MILIBAND, FORMER BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY
"People
in need around the world have lost a tireless, effective and redoubtable
champion today following the murder of Jo Cox MP. Her passionate advocacy,
first of all working in NGOs and then in parliament as an elected
representative, on behalf of vulnerable and displaced people was a study in
effective activism."
HENRIETTE REKER, MAYOR OF COLOGNE , WHO SURVIVED A POLITICALLY MOTIVATED
STABBING LAST OCTOBER
"The
death of Jo Cox has really affected me. Xenophobic slogans inevitably lead to
violence.
"We
all bear the responsibility that such a situation never happens again in Germany
or Europe ."
JOHN CURTICE, POLLING EXPERT AND POLITICS PROFESSOR
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCLYDE
"It's
fairly clear no one is quite sure what has happened. Until it's clear who was
responsible and what their motivation was or it might have been, all it does is
stop the campaign when the 'Remain' side probably would not want it to be
stopped."
MUJTABA RAHMAN, EUROPE PRACTICE HEAD AT EURASIA GROUP
"This
will hurt the momentum of the 'Leave' campaign, which has been gaining steadily
in recent polls."
"It
will allow British Prime Minister David Cameron an opportunity to act like a
statesman and retrieve the agenda, something he has lost over the last week.
"If
the incident is confirmed to have been motivated by Brexit, it will also
reflect poorly on the more strident elements of the Vote Leave campaign, potentially
swinging undecided voters towards 'Remain.'"
ALAN RUSKIN, GLOBAL CO-HEAD OF FX RESEARCH AT DEUTSCHE
BANK
"Certainly
people are talking about the possibility that this does influence the Brexit
vote in favour of 'Remain'. It is a tragic event all around. There is a sense,
there is an immediate emotional reaction, but there is still a week before the
referendum itself."
"It definitely is seen as part of the story, the recovery of risk.
Generally you are seeing so-called riskier assets recover. All the assets,
whether equities, aussie/yen or sterling/yen are recovering. They are up on the
perception of a higher probability of a 'Remain' vote."

Tens of Thousands of Syrian Refugees caught in Bureaucratic Red Tape as Children Die
.
Warning: this
article contains images
that readers may find distressing
Meet three-year-old Aylan
Kurd and his five-year-old brother Galip. This was before they were caught in a cross fire
of the war between the Islamic extremists and Kurds in Syria . Survival depended on their families reaching
the shores of Europe before getting killed in
the bombing.
Here is Aylan Kurd
yesterday, on the beach in Greece ,
where he, his brother, and mother all died when they were in sight of freedom.
We are in the midst of a
refugee crisis exasperated by politics that is killing thousands of people while
bureaucrats hide behind EU laws wholly unsuited for the world of today. I say "we" because our United States policy toward Iraq and Syria and our military action is
the cause for the 11 million people fleeing those countries and landing in no
man's land.
Look at the numbers of
Syrians alone fleeing the war zone for a better life for their families. These are the latest estimates of the human
carnage.
300,000 Dead
1,200,000 injured
11,000,000 Displaced
However, the time for
talking is over. We must pressure the EU
to suspend or modify their rules requiring the registration of refugees at the
borders and allow the immediate and free movement of the thousands of families caught
in the bureaucratic snafu, to get to the countries where they are welcome.
The people of Europe are among the most generous in the world. They are prepared to house and feed the
starving refugees. Germany , France , and other countries stand
ready to save a generation of Middle Eastern children if the bureaucrats would
just allow them to pass through border countries to the destinations waiting to
help.
We cannot stand by and
watch. Demand action. Save lives.
Protect our children!

Memo to Congress - Fix Foreign Policy - Putin & Ukraine
.
Libya has been under US sanctions since 2011. Sudan has been sanctioned since
2002. Burma since 1997. Syria since 1986.. Iran since 1979. Cuba since 1962. North Korea since 1950. We also had economic sanctions against the
former Soviet Union from 1948 until the
collapse in 1991.
Being an American it is
sometimes difficult to see the world through anything other than rose colored
glasses. Think about it.
Our principle source of
information on foreign policy is a media that long ago stopped reporting the
news and decided to make the news. Their
principle source for information are bureaucrats and politicians working for
agencies like the State Department, the intelligence agencies, and groups like
NATO and the United Nations.
Then there are the
international banks, international corporations, international financing
mechanisms like the International Monetary Fund and World Bank not to mention
the vast array of foundations, think tanks, pharmaceutical companies supplying
drugs to third world countries, defense contractors (including the most
powerful of all the arms dealers) among the many special interests with a
special interest in foreign affairs and all the money, power and perks found
around such money pits.
The world has been
controlled by these foreign affairs special interests since the beginning of
the 20th century and the dawning of world wars.
The sad part of the truth is that they have all joined forces to find ways
to use government and private resources to manipulate events around the world
for the purpose of altering the foreign policy balance.
The sadder part of the
truth is that in the course of their manipulation they are totally devoid of
humanitarian principles and international law but serve a higher purpose,
feeding greed and accumulating wealth.
Of course the media consistently paints a picture of serving the higher
good by these groups but what they really meant was serving a higher god and
their god is greed manifested in power and wealth.
We have pretty much been
lied to about sinister purposes behind the foreign affairs of the past century
and most certainly been lied to about the worst abusers of misdirected foreign
policy. Maybe we will wake up, or maybe
we will keep having "isolated" conflicts that leave hundreds of
thousands of people dead, millions and millions of people condemned to refugee
camps, and more and more of the world's natural resources in the hands of
people loyal to no government but their god Greed.
Look around you. Listen to what the media is telling you. The cover story of the day is "Putin
is a bad guy - he wants to recreate Russia ." You hear it from the mouths of the Obama
administration, it is parroted by the news media, echoed by our allies around
the world (although with far less enthusiasm than in America ), and applauded by Wall
Street and the international banking community.
They also tell you Putin
has no respect for international laws, international treaties nor international
banking since he is destabilizing the world financial markets.
If I were the America public
I would search a lot deeper into the motives behind those condemning
Putin. So far the Russian forces have
done nothing more than to protect Russian assets in Crimea, namely a huge naval
base on the Black Sea .
As a result he has earned
the wrath of Obama and been bombarded by cream puffs called sanctions, economic
sanctions at that, and oh yeah, Russia
was tossed from the G8. Now we seem to
have a long history of using tough economic sanctions to punish errant nations
and force compliance with our will.
But only once in the past
66 years have US economic sanctions really worked and that was when we
sanctioned our own closest allies, Great Britain ,
France and Israel during the
Suez Canal crisis of 1956. The three were going to invade Egypt in response to the Egyptian
nationalization of the Suez Canal and the
Americans stopped them dead in their tracks when President Eisenhower started
dumping British pounds on the world monetary market and cut off all American
oil and gas to the three allies.
It might have been the
only time in world history that an invasion was stopped by economic sanctions
and probably the last time in history that sanctions actually served people
rather than the financial interests impacted by the area. No lives were lost in a costly invasion that
would probably have resulted in major damage to the canal and massive
disruption of the world economy since it was the gateway for oil to the western
world.
So the bottom line is,
economic sanctions don't work.
Just ask the Cubans who
have lived with them for over 50 years. In
truth, economic sanctions only hurt the people in those countries who are
already victims before we got involved.
Then there is the issue of
violating international law, etc., etc. So far no one has proven Russia or Putin
violated international law. On the other
hand, the history books are filled with American violations of about every
international law and treaty that exists dating all the way back to our
treaties with the Native Americans.
People need to understand
we have made it a practice to ignore the law, local, state, federal or
international whenever it was useful for the economic interests of, well,
certainly not our nation but more appropriately the financial manipulators who
use our treasury as their money and our military as their private army.
Wake up...The latest NSA
mess has proven our government totally ignores laws protecting things like privacy
or unreasonable search and seizure and has run ramshackle over our Constitution
and Bill of Rights. It also violated
every international law and treaty we have with our allies and everyone else.
Is drug traffic
illegal? Not if our intelligence
agencies are involved like in Asia and South America .
How about the ultimate
abuse, political assassination? We've
been there and done that.
Illegal invasions like we
say Putin is poised to undertake in the Ukraine ? Ask the Iraq
or Afghanistan
governments how they feel about that.
Indirectly we are behind
many more abuses of international laws and treaties like triggering the Arab
spring revolutions and so many more I could write a book.
Yet our president and
media stand up and declare Putin and Russia to be acting illegally and
like a bully? We, our government, needs
to look in a mirror before it starts condemning anyone for illegal activity.
And while we are at it, I
have cited a litany of ways we have directly violated international laws and
treaties but there are far more indirect methods that have been used so other
people take the blame.
Foreign policy today has
little to do with assuring the quality of life for people, or their health, education
or welfare. Those who think we are
spreading democracy throughout the world so we can thus protect the lives,
freedom and opportunities for the suppressed masses have got it all wrong.
In the vast majority of
the cases our foreign policy supports a financial concern of someone other than
the American people and that is a bigger crime than the crimes we already
commit violating international laws and treaties.
We need an independent
re-evaluation of our entire foreign policy strategy. We need to know if NATO and all other
international groups serve the agenda to help people or just help special
interests.
Putin was upset because
the Ukraine
wanted to join NATO and the European Union and we were behind the scenes making
sure it happened. What does a country
like the Ukraine have to do
with a North Atlantic defense group? Maybe NATO has outlived it's usefulness and is
now creating conflict to justify it's existence?
Maybe it's time to stop
being hypocrites and start being leaders in finding peace, not causing war and
unrest.

Maybe it's time to leave the Ukraine to the Ukrainians
.
International manipulation underway byRussia , the United States and the European Union to control
the fate and future of the Ukraine
might be the way we like to play the game of foreign policy but recent events
raise serious questions as to the validity of such an approach.
International manipulation underway by
Sometimes it just seems
like the big boys, those so called more civilized Western nations don't know
when to leave well enough alone. I think
most countries like to give lip service to respecting the will of the people
indigenous to a region like the Ukraine ,
but darn if we can really keep our word when it comes to actions.
Perhaps we forget little
historical facts like the Ukraine
has been settled by members of the homo genus since 43,000-45,000 BC when they
were first called Neanderthals and discovered in the Molodova archaeological
sites. And Gravettian settlements were
unearthed dating to 32,000 BC in the Buran-Kaya cave site of the Crimean Mountains .
It was part of the Khazar
kingdom when time changed from BC to AD, the time of the birth and life of Jesus, and by 800 AD became Jewish. Prior to that the Roman Emperor Constantine,
a non-Christian, was convinced by his mother Helena to first issue the Edict of
Milan in 313 AD granting religious tolerance to all religions.
Twelve years later there
was the first ecumenical council, the Council of Nicea in 325 AD, when he
ordered the adoption of the Nicene Creed which evolved into the universal creed
of Christendom. Thus Constantine embraced Christianity and became
the first Holy Roman (Christian) emperor.
From that time on Christianity was also evolving in the Ukraine .
However, it took until the
Great Moravia empire under the Grand Duke Vladimir the Great before the Ukraine
formally embraced Christianity in 988 AD.
Like Emperor Constantine earlier Vladimir
was influenced by a strong Christian female in the family, his grandmother,
Princess Olga.
The Ukraine , like
every country or kingdom in the world, was beset by war after war throughout
the centuries, the rather odd consequence of the evolution of civilization in
the western world.
So
commonplace were wars that The New York Times reported in 2003 that in the
prior 3,400 years humans have been entirely at peace for just 268 years, or just 8 percent of
recorded history. You can throw in the
last 11 years since The New York Times article because wars continued (Iraq & Afghanistan ).
In Europe alone which includes the Ukraine there
have been 550 wars recorded throughout history.
Ironically during the most recent 20th century a staggering 76 wars were
recorded, the most of any century in history.
Included were the largest, most expensive and most devastating wars ever
including World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam wars, though neither
Korea nor Vietnam count in the European total.
So nations like the Ukraine and most of Europe
have been buried in a deluge of wars since recorded history began and as
mankind matured and became more civilized the pace and terror of war increased
proportionately. What in the world does
that tell you about the nature of mankind?
The Ukraine took the first step in
actual independence, something they really haven't had since the Neanderthal age some 45,000 years ago. They revolted and threw out the President Viktor
Yanukovych accusing him of murdering
civilians during the recent demonstrations and stealing billions of dollars
from the nation.
In
the meantime in Crimea thugs seized government
buildings and today two airports and raised Russian flags. Crimea has been pro-Russia ever since the Soviet Union quashed a Ukrainian revolt and brought on
the great famine of 1921, leaving 1.5 million Ukrainians dead.
From
then on the Soviets under Josef Stalin tried to liquidate opposition and to repopulate
the country with Russians. With the fall
of the Soviet Empire in 1991 independence seemed to return to the nation but
economic difficulties, foreign interference and competitive manipulation by Russia , the European Union and United States
made it impossible.
The
people of the Ukraine and
Crimea have been forced together for so long and manipulated by so many that
the Crimea favors strong ties to Russia
and the Ukraine to Europe . Perhaps in
the end the two must become separate countries so they can align with the
nations they desire.
My
plea is for all competitors to stop this game of international chess and for
the first time in about 45,000 years let the people of the Ukraine and Crimea
decide for themselves how to structure and align their nation.
Hasn't
our brand of western civilization ruined enough lives and nations over the
centuries? The people of the Ukraine and Crimea
know what is best, what kind of government they want, and what kind of
relationships they want with the rest of the world. Give them the few billions of dollars of
foreign aid they need and step back and let it happen.
