What does a Spanish Civil War revolutionary, The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, one of the most influential architects of the 20th century and Walsh High School in Ottumwa, Iowa have in common?

Felix Candela

Probably unbeknownst to most people from Ottumwa when the new Walsh High School opened in 1962 students stepped into an unusual building using a design by one of the most famous architects of the 20th century, Felix Candela.

Born in MadridSpain in 1910, Candela was a national sports champion in Spain and a noted award-winning architect who was pursuing graduate studies in Germany when the Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936.

He left school to return to Spain and fight for the Republic against Franco and when Franco won he slipped into a refugee camp in France to avoid becoming a prisoner of the Franco regime.  In 1939 he was selected for relocation to Mexico and moved to his new home.

In Mexico Candela pioneered the use of thin shelled concrete in building construction and among the nearly 1,000 buildings he designed were the revolutionary 1968 Olympic Stadium in Mexico City and the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

The Guadalupe Basilica is the most popular Catholic pilgrimage site in the world drawing over 20 million visitors annually to see the tilma of Juan Diego with the image of Our Lady that was made December 12, 1531.

As a point of reference, at that time America had not been settled and Henry 8th was still King of England.

Candela developed a thin shelled concrete material for use in buildings called the "hyperbolic paraboloid" and his structures are located in Mexico, the United StatesSpainVenezuelaColumbiaPeruGuatemalaPuerto RicoEcuadorGreat Britain and Norway.

My father, Wayne E. Putnam arranged with Felix to use his designs for the new Walsh High School as well as our home overlooking the Ottumwa Country Club.  And that is how all those pieces in the title tie together. Felix Candela, a very nice man and world renowned architect whose world famous "hyperbolic paraboloid" design was incorporated into Walsh High School.

Local architects for both of the projects were Ken Steffen and Steve Stoltz.

Felix moved with his family to the United States in 1971 and taught at Harvard University and the University of Illinois.  He died at the age of 87 while living in North Carolina.

The deadly earthquake in Mexico has appeared to have triggered an eruption of a volcano in the country, adding to the death toll of at least 248 people.

The Popocatépetl volcano apparently erupted after the 7.1 magnitude quake struck Mexico City at 1:14pm on Tuesday afternoon.
A church on the slopes of the volcano in Atzitzihuacán collapsed during mass, killing 15 people, according to Puebla governor José Antonio Gali.
At least 20 children are among the 248 killed by the quake after the Colegio Enrique Rebsamen primary school collapsed.
Thirty more children and eight adults are sill missing, with desperate parents waiting outside the gates for any news.

Relatives said they had received a WhatsApp message from two girls inside.
Adriana D’Fargo, 32, whose seven-year-old daughter is still missing, said: ”They keep pulling kids out, but we know nothing of my daughter.”
President Enrique Pena Nieto, after visiting the school, appealed for calm, saying: “The priority at this moment is to keep rescuing people who are still trapped and to give medical attention to the injured people.”

The rescue effort continued long through the night, the work punctuated by cries of “quiet” so searchers could listen for any faint calls for help,
Mr Pena Nieto added: “They have heard voices in there.”
The magnitude 7.1 quake struck at 1:14pm on the 32nd anniversary of the tremor that killed thousands and came just two hours after earthquake drills were held across Mexico to mark the date.

Mexico City mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said buildings fell at 44 sites in the capital alone as high-rises across the city swayed and twisted and hundreds of thousands of panicked people ran into the streets blocking traffic.

The national Civil Defence agency reported that the confirmed death toll had climbed to 248, more than half of them in the capital.
The official Twitter feed of agency head Luis Felipe Puente said 117 dead had been counted in Mexico City and 72 in Morelos state, which is just south of the capital.

It said 43 were known dead in Puebla state, where the quake was centred.

Where a six-story office building collapsed in Mexico City, sisters Cristina and Victoria Lopez Torres formed part of a human chain passing bottled water.
Christina said: ”I think it’s human nature that drives everyone to come and help others.
Her sister Victoria added: ”We are young, we didn’t live in ’85, but we know that it’s important to come out to the street to help.”
